Agent setup

Agent is a program which monitors computer activity and executes commands from the master executive program. To adjust Agent to the activity profile and the way the monitored computer, selected users group, or the whole computer network are used, uplook enables you to define some Agent’s settings:

  • Show start-up information. If this option is enabled, when Agent is started, information that monitoring has been started will be displayed on the screen.
  • Show Agent’s icon on the taskbar. If this option is enabled, Agent’s icon is displayed on the taskbar indicating its activity. This way a user obtains a few pieces of information. He is informed that his computer is being monitored. He can see when a connection with the master program is active and knows IP address of a computer which has established a connection with Agent. He also knows when data is sent to uplook.
  • Enable logging. If this option is enabled, Agent saves all information on executed commands into a log file. This file may be needed to diagnose the flow of messages between uplook and Agent.
  • Enable statistics (monitoring a user). If you enable this option, statistics on a user’s activity will be collected.
  • Specifying inactivity time. Inactivity time is a minimum time, after which a selected computer can be regarded as inactive, if no actions such as pressing a key or clicking a mouse were performed. Inactivity time can be adjusted according to a user’s work profile. Its value has the biggest impact on the results of statistics of software and computer usage.
  • Period for saving statistics on a local disk. Agent periodically saves current monitoring results onto the local user’s disk. Owing to that no data is lost in the case of system failure. This setting specifies, after how many minutes Agent is to save results. The shorter the time is, the less probable it is that data is lost, but the bigger load for a user’s system is. Too long time results in a higher danger of loosing data partially, but it does not burden the system.
  • Delete statistics form the disk. This setting specifies after how many days Agent is to delete statistics from a user’s local disk. If results are kept on the disk, it is possible to send statistics to the master program even after few or several days. Due to short deletion time, uplook may not receive all data. Whereas too long time will result in decreasing free space on a user’s disk.
  • Transferring screenshots from a user’s computer. On uplook’s request Agent may send a current screen copy from a user’s computer. This setting specifies if and how a user is to be informed on this fact. It is possible to ask a user for permission to download the screenshot from his computer, or download without asking, or only inform a user on downloading.

The settings are transferred to Agent, once a connection has been established. You can configure Agent for a single user or for the whole group or network.

  • Setup for a user. If it has not been set or it has been disabled, the program attempts to send the setup to a parent object, namely to a group (if it exists) or network.
  • Setup for a group. If it has not been set or it has been disabled, the program attempts to send the setup to a parent object, namely to a group (if it exists) or network.
  • Setup for a network. If it has not been set, program global setup is transferred.
  • Global setup. It is transferred, if any of the above has not been set.
