Copying a database
With time, the uplook database
contains more and more information. Therefore, it becomes more and more valuable.
That is why it is so important to create security backups. Moreover, to improve
software efficiency, it is recommended to copy a database periodically for
archiving purposes and then create a new one.
Copying database is an important feature when user wants to change
database provider, e.g. moving from
Microsoft Jet (Access) to
Microsoft SQL Sever. uplook makes it possible
to create a copy of a currently open database.
Copying database takes considerable amount of time, especialy
for large databases. Therefore, if both source and destination databases
exist on the same Microsoft SQL Server, it is recommended to use
built-in server function of database replication.
To create a copy of a database choose from
the main menu option Tools
Database
Copy... A dialog window will be displayed on the screen.
|
1. Choose
the database provider for destination database.
First, you need to choose destination database format.
Depending on the program version, you may choose
Microsoft Jet (Access) and/or Microsoft
SQL Server / Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE). When you are done,
click Next >. You will see another dialog window,
depending on the chosen database provider: Microsoft
Jet or Microsoft SQL Server. |
 |
|
Microsoft Jet (Access)
In the edit field specify path to destination database file.
For MS Access databases program will automaticaly append extension .anu to the filename,
unless you have specified one.
You may also open a standard file selection window
to select the file. To do it, click Browse...
When you are done with database location click Next
>. A new empty database will be created in the specified location.
Now uplook is ready to start copying data. |
 |
|
Microsoft SQL Server / Microsoft
Desktop Engine (MSDE)
List Server SQL contains available Microsoft SQL serers. When uplook
is executed for the first time the list is empty. It is filled when
user tries to open it for the first time. If the list does not contain
the expected server name, you have to type it manually.
Specify the name of destination database in field
Database.
Frame Connection properties contains settings
required for connecting to SQL server successfully.
There are two ways of authorizing:
- Windows authorization - Username and password
used during login in Windows will also be used to login to SQL server.
- SQL Server authorization - you have
to provide your own username and password to authorize in
SQL server. Use fields Username and Password.
If you check field Remember username and password you won't
have to provide them each time you start uplook.
When you are done with setting parameters click
Next >. A new database will be created and uplook
will be ready to start copying data.
If the opening database fails,
there are four probable reasons. If any of those cases takes place,
it may be have to be nesessary to contact server administrator.
- SQL server does not exist,
is not running or is not physicaly connected to the network
(network failure).
- Specified user does not exist.
- Specified password is incorrect.
- Specified user does not have
required priviledges to modificate the database.
