Starting statlook for the first time
When you run uplook the first time, it is neccesary to
perform few initialization procedures to prepare program for work.
1. Create a database.
When it is run for the first time, uplook automatically creates a
database, in which the network setup, users’ data and all data transferred by Agents is to be stored.
A new database will not be created if uplook has been updated or reinstalled
and the Windows registry contains information on the database folder.
The database will be created in Microsoft Jet (Access) format,
which is the default database engine for uplook. If you have appropriate
program version you can create a new database
manually or open an existing one, using
different database engine (Microsoft SQL Server for example).
2. Define (map) your network configuration.
The most fundamental data structure in uplook is its network configuration,
stored in the database. Before you start working with uplook you
have to configure it,
that is to define all computers that are to be scanned or monitored.
It is not required to configure the network if you intent to perform audits
with external scanning program only.
3. Install monitoring software (Agents).
The monitoring program, named Agent, was created for
greater comfort and efficiency of work. In uplook statlook version,
the Agent is used to monitor a computer, create statistics
and send them to master program. Programs uplook and
uplook for audit supply external file scanners,
which you can run of a computer you want to scan. However, it is
using Agent program for performing audits remotely is comfortable and fast.
With Agent software installed you can scan and control your entire network,
from one computer station.
You can install Agent using standard
setup program or by modifying login script. You can also perform
remote installation of Agent
(from uplook's window) under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
SP6, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP
Professional.
After performing those procedures, statlook is ready to work.
