Managing licenses
uplook
enables you to manage licences for company-owned software by specifying which
applications can be installed on users’ computers. Periodic audits, performed by a person responsible for company
software, substantially curb or even eliminate the problem of computer piracy.
Managing licences is of informative character, which means that it helps to
determine whether installed software is compliant with licences owned. However,
it does not allow to block the start-up or installation of specified
applications.
A few elements are required to manage software:
- Specifying
how many and what applications have been purchased and are used by a
company.
- Specifying,
which users can use specified applications.
- Software audits
enable to detect the
discrepancies between the definition of rights for an application and the
actual situation. Using this information, rights to individual programs
can be set differently or the missing number of licences can be purchased.
Software audit requested by uplook is performed by Agent installed on a user’s computer. Audit involves checking what programs have been
installed on hard disks. Information on each program is read, and when the
audit is completed it is transferred to uplook.
To make identification easier, uplook includes
a base of application patterns, which enables to identify audit results
precisely and unambiguously. As new programs appear on the market, the base is
updated and you can download its
updated version for free. It is also possible to adjust freely the pattern base
for an individual case – users can create their own application patterns. Software audits
can be also performed using an external file
scanner on computers, which are not connected to the network, or on which Agent has not been installed.
Most of software management operations can be accessed from the Licences tab on the navigation bar in
the main window of the program. The
tab includes a list of licensed software, which is used by the company and a
list of individual users using the software. The software list provides you
with information, if a number of licences has been exceeded displaying a
relevant icon:
- the number of licences is
greater than or equal to the demand,
- the number of licences is smaller than the
demand.
uplook enables to perform a number of software
management functions:
- Identification of licences for
applications used.
- Specifying for
an application, which users are authorised to use it legally, or
conversely specifying
which applications can be used only by a selected user.
- Audit meaning checking which programs are
used by users and if it is compliant with a set profile.
- Creating
aliases for names of executable files to
facilitate analysis of data related to monitoring users performance (only
for the version including the statlook module).
