Defining a new network
To define (create a new) network select Network New Network... from the main menu, right click
on the network list and select New
Network from the displayed context menu or click on the toolbar on the Network tab. A network creation wizard will apear.
|
1.
Start working with the wizard First thing to do is
to set network name in field Network name.
Then choose the way the network is to be created.
There are three options:
- Automatically - network address will be
extracted from the computer's IP address. Network's class will be set
to C (contains 254 possible IP addresses).
When you have chosen that option and set the network name proceed by
clicking Next >. The wizard will take you to page
"Scanning IP addresses".
- Manually - the wizard will let you set
network address, mask, range of IP addresses in the network
and range of excluded addresses.
When you are done, click Next >. The wizard will take you
to page "Define network parameters".
- Empty network - the wizard will create
an empty network with no computers assigned. You can edit network
parameters later using option edit network.
To create a new network click Next >. The wizard will take you
to page "Finish working with the wizard".

2.
Define network parameters
The most fundamental parameters for each network are address IP
(you set it in field Network IP and network mask (field
Network mask). Enter those parameters carefuly, especialy the mask.
Most of networks are of class C with mask set to 255.255.255.0.
That gives a network addresses range holding up to 254 addresses.
Network of class B with mask 255.255.0.0 has enough space for
65534 addresses. Mistake in setting the mask
may cause uplook scanning through
gigantic number of IP addresses (for example, mask set to 255.0.0.0
result in scanning of 16777214 addresses).
You may set the address range more precisely
by checking field Include only addresses and setting limiting addresses
in fields From and To.
In the same way you may exclude range of addresses
from scanning. To do so use the field Exclude addresses.
When you are done proceed to the next step,
by clicking Next >.

3.
Prepare scanning When you have defined
network parameters, move on to scanning addresses.
You can decide to skip scanning if you consider it unneccesary.
- Scan IP addresses - the wizard will scan
all IP addresses that belong to predefined network.
If you choose that option and click Next > the wizard will
take you to page "Scanning IP addresses".
- Skip scanning - the wizard will add
all the IP addresses that belong to the network.
If you choose that option and click Next > the wizard will
take you to page "List of network devices".

4.
Scanning IP addresses
In that phase of network creation the wizard scans all IP
addresses that belong to the predefinied network. Program sends
"ping" signals to each of the IP addresses and waits for response.
If the computer or a network device with a certain IP address is up
and running it instantly sends back a reply signal. uplook waits
for the response few seconds. If it is not comming, program assumes
there no computer with that IP address and excludes it from the network.
Warning! Microsoft Windows XP with ServicePack 2 blocks "ping" signals by default. It may happen that uplook
will not be able to detect such computer in the network.
To prevent this problem, make sure the following conditions are met:
- Computer being scanned is in the same subnet that
Master and Master is running on Microsoft Windows XP,
Microsoft Windows 2000 or newer.
- Option Allow incoming echo request is enabled
in Windows Firewall.
To enable this option on the scanned computer go to
Control Panel, then Security Centre. Now find
tab Advanced in Windows Firewall settings
and choose your network connection. Click Settings,
go to tab ICMP Settings and enable option
Allow incoming echo request.
When scanning is complete the wizard will automatically
show page "List of network devices".

5.
List of network devices
In that phase of network creating the wizard will try to automaticaly
recognize types of devices in the network that passed scanning
and try to acquire some of their properties.
This operation works the best when uplook is running under
Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP.
On older systems the detecting process is very limited.
Recognizing devices may take time, especialy
in case of large networks. You may abort the operation by clicking
Abort. After abort request you may have to wait a while
until program closes all open connections.
When operation is complete checkboxes in the list
will be automaticaly checked for all devices detected as computers.
Other types of devices (printers, switches, etc.) will remain unchecked.
You may check or uncheck all devices manualy. All checked devices (computers)
will be added to the defined network.
To complete the process,
click Next >.

6.
Finish working with the wizard Last page
of the network wizard informs of number of computers that will
be added to a new network. Morover, there are two options to choose:
- Create network and leave - the wizard will add
defined network with all selected computers to the database.
When you click Finish the wizard window will be closed.
- Create network and restart the wizard
- the wizard will add
defined network with all selected computers to the database.
When you click Finish the wizard will take you to page
"Start working with the wizard"
starting process of creating network from the beginning.
