Defining a new user

The simplest way to define a network user is by means of automatic setup. If such setup is not possible, we want to add only few users or IP address of an added computer does not belong to the network (e.g. a home computer), you can define a user directly.

On the network list on the Network tab select a network or a group, for which you want to assign a new user as a member. Then right click the mouse and select New User from the displayed context menu, or select Network New User... from the main menu or click on the toolbar on the Network tab. A dialogue box for a new user will be displayed on a screen.

The dialogue box includes the General tab displaying general user’s data, the Licences tab with the list of available applications and the Agent Setup tab where you can enter Agent setup. The rules for assigning licences are specified in Managing software, whereas Agent’s setup is described in Agent setup.

In the Name field enter a descriptive user’s name, which will be displayed in the network list. The name can be a string of maximum 64 characters. There is no requirement for the name to be unique; however, for the sake of transparency and order, names should not be duplicated within one network or group.

From the Group drop-down list select a group, a new user is to be assigned to as a member. If the list does not include a desired group, you can add a new one by clicking the button.

The frame Connect using...groups options, which define the manner to establish a connection with Agent.

You should select Computer is not connected to networkif you want to use a computer (user) which is not connected to a network or will not have Agent installed. This information is necessary for a process of reading software audit results, performed by means of an external file scanner

In the IP address fields enter an IP address of a computer user. After each three digit address section is entered, the cursor moves to the following edit field. If a name of a computer has been specified in the DNS name, IP address is entered automatically when you click Get from DNS.

If IP addresses are assigned dynamically (DHCP), to “become immune” to changes of addresses you can use the option which allows you to specify a computer using its name. For this purpose select the DNS name field and enter the name of a computer. If an IP address is known, you can specify the name automatically, by clicking Get from IP.

In the Access code field enter a password which will be used to authorise a connection with Agent installed on a user’s computer. The password is also a protection against an authorised access. An access code has to compliant with the one specified in the course of Agent setup. It can consist of maximum 32 letters and digits. It is case sensitive. There is a possibility to change an access code remotely later.

Other fields are information field and they are filled in when a connection with Agent has been established. Their role has been discussed in Editing a user.

To accept a new user and close the dialogue box, click OK. You can accept the data entered, not closing the window, only by clicking the Apply button. The Cancel button closes the box without saving the data (if Apply has not been clicked before).
